According to the Press of Atlantic City, the cities of Wildwood and North Wildwood are close to ratifying a new law that will prohibit smoking on the boardwalk.
North Wildwood mayor Patrick Rosenello said, “We’re going to ask people to refrain from smoking this year and that it will be banned for next year. Public health and public safety are the two main issues. The effects of secondhand smoke have become very, very obvious and well-known.
“The summer of 2017 is going to be an educational period. We’re going to ask people to refrain from smoking this year and that it will be banned for next year.”
Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano said, “A lot of people don’t like to be interrupted with secondhand smoke,” At this time, it seems to be the right thing to do.”
Cigarettes also pose a fire hazard, as trashcan fires occur several times a year on the boardwalk.
Though not everyone sees the ban as a necessity, I for one applaud the move. My personal reason for supporting the ban is that I won’t have to look at all the discarded cigarette butts (though the Boardwalk SID does a good job of cleaning them up as quickly as possible). For those of you who can’t do without a smoke, Wildwood has a nice vape store with helpful folks that can work with you to help you kick your habit. My wife did it, so can you!
