Nor’easter/blizzard prepped to hit the Wildwoods Flooding more of an issue than snow accumulation.

Wildwood Signs with Snow
The upcoming storm has everyone all abuzz, so I thought I’d add my 2 cents worth of (useless?) knowledge.

Snow Accumulation

I’ve lived in the ‘Woods for some time, so I can tell you that the hype about snowfall accumulations is almost always just that — hype. What we islanders concern ourselves with in times of storms is flooding. Take one full moon, sprinkle in a high tide and add some heavy rain, and sure enough you’ll have the perfect recipe for a wet few days here at the Jersey shore.

Blizzard? Nor’easter?

For a storm to be a blizzard, for a period of 3 or more hours, the following conditions must exist:
1. Sustained or frequent gusts of winds at speeds of 35 mph or higher.
2. Considerable falling and/or blowing snow — enough to frequently reduce visibility to less than one quarter-mile.
** There is no specific amount of snowfall required to categorize a storm as a blizzard.
** Temperature is also is not a factor in classifying a blizzard.
For a storm to be a nor’easter, the following must be true:
1. The storm must be a strong, low-pressure system in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast region of the United States (that’s it!).
* A nor’easter get’s it’s name from the northeasterly winds blowing in from the ocean ahead of the storm.
So, based on the info above, the storm is a nor-easter and expected to be a blizzard in much of the state.

Lastly, I would like to mention that a good place to find storm information is the National Weather Service. They give you the facts without the fluff, which is the way I like my weather forecasts. Wildwood weather is here.
